Computer Cleanup for Windows XP
1. Run CCleaner (ccleaner.exe)
*If you don’t use CCleaner, see below.
2. Run Disk Check, this will take awhile:
Open My Computer, right click on a
drive
Choose Properties, then select the Tools tab
Do each of the following for each drive:
- Under Error-Checking, click Check now
- Select Automatically fix file system errors
- Select Scan for and Attempt recovery of bad sectors
- Start (for the C: drive, read message and click yes.)
Restart your computer
3. Defragment the drive (this could take awhile):
Hint: Get a better defrag by rebooting your computer in Safe Mode (Press F8 at startup).
- Open My Computer, right click on a drive
Choose Properties, then select the Tools tab
- In the Defragmentation section, click Defragment Now …
More Left over stuff to look for in the C drive:
Uninstall leftover folders for Service Packs:
- Open My Computer
- Browse to C:\Windows\
- Look for $NTxxx$ folders and delete
*If you don’t use CCleaner, do the following:
A. Choose Start, All Programs, Accessories, System
tools
then select “Disk Cleanup”, Okay
- Choose file to cleanup. The default is probably good.
- Click Okay, then Yes.
B. Cleanup ~*.tmp and *.asd files:
- Click Start, Search, All files and folders
- Type in file name criteria ~*.tmp *.asd
- Click Search
- Select all the files that are found by using <Ctrl> A
- Press <Delete>
C. Continue with step 2 above.
